"We are shocked by the news of the fire that destroyed the historic Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in New York City, last night on Orthodox Easter. I wish to express my heartfelt sorrow for this tragedy and send my sympathies to father Djokan Majstorovic, the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America and the Serbian Orthodox Church as well as to the Serbian community in New York. At this difficult moment we should stand united and ready to assist and support reconstruction efforts and help rebuild the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, our spiritual and cultural center in New York City, for ourselves and for our children."
