Washington, D.C, 18 January 2021 - Serbia joins the United States in celebrating Martin Luther King’s Day, the occasion of which was the topic of Ambassador Marko Djuric’s post on Twitter.

“On this day, we remember and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which continues in our hearts, minds, and souls, for his words, values, and his dream are everlasting and universal for all mankind.“, he wrote in his Tweet.

He also cited a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Today, the United States of America is celebrating the Day of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a Baptist minister who was one of the most prominent civil rights leaders. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964.

In his fight for the equality of African Americans, King advocated the use of nonviolent means and civil disobedience.

He was assassinated in Memphis, on April 4, 1968, right before his speech within the Poor People's Campaign, which he had initiated earlier that year.

Dr. Martin Luther King is considered to be one of the most eloquent speakers in US history. Today, his sermons and speeches, such as “Loving Your Enemies” and “I Have a Dream”, represent not only the American legacy but the legacy of the entire mankind.
